A half day Workshop on “ICT for Schools” will be conducted on Friday 20th November, 2015 [2:00 PM-5:30 PM] at Kharghar campus of C-DAC Mumbai. The workshop will be covering presentation-cum-demo on:

  1. Online Labs
  2. eBasta – School Books to eBooks and
  3. Assessment and Monitoring Framework.

CBSE/STATE board teachers from Classes VIII, IX, X ; Subjects – Science, Maths, English are invited to participate in this workshop. This workshop will be conducted by Educational Technology Unit of C-DAC Mumbai.

CDAC Mumbai projects awarded SKOCH Order of Merit Medals and listed among India’s Best-2013

Three research projects of CDAC Mumbai have been awarded the prestigious SKOCH Order of Merit medals for their distinguished and outstanding contributions in enabling and promoting Digital Inclusion of Indian citizens into the ICT mainstream. These projects are:

These medals along with certificates were conferred to CDAC Mumbai in an awards ceremony held at 33rd SKOCH Summit during September 2-3, 2013 in New Delhi. SKOCH awards from SKOCH Group are hailed as one of the highest independently instituted civilian honours in the country and considered as independent benchmarks for best practices in India in the fields of governance, finance, banking, technology, corporate citizenship, economics and inclusive growth.

CDAC Mumbai projects were selected by an eminent jury of domain experts among nearly a thousands nominations through a rigorous scrutiny process. Scrutiny process went for nearly 3 months comprising about 200 jury presentations and 150 hours of deliberations.

These research projects have also been listed among India’s Best-2013 in Smart Governance and Digital Inclusion. It is noteworthy here that CDAC Mumbai, over 25 years, has been extensively involved in R & D activities related to various fields of software technology such as multilingual computing, e-learning, e-governance, free/open source software & cyber security etc. Solutions developed under these projects are being used by a large number of targeted end-users, community members, institutions etc. and have been highly appreciated by them.

As significant section of Indian population consists of people with disabilities, “Enhancing Accessibility for FOSS Desktops project is an effort to make common computer desktop accessible to such people, thereby enabling them to avail the benefits of modern ICT technologies. This project so far has been able to produce reusable and accessible software solutions as per the specific needs of disabled people having visual, physical and cognitive impairments. All solutions and products developed under the project are open source and freely available. All these solutions have been widely deployed, distributed and downloaded among individuals and disability related organisations/institutions. Major products developed under the project are ALViC (Accessible Linux for Visually Challenged), Anumaan (an predictive text entry system) and GEM (GEstures with Mouse) for physically impaired people, GNU/Linux distribution for Cognitively Challenged etc. Moreover, project has also made significant contributions to FOSS communities like Orca, Nautilus, Poppler, and OpenOffice.org etc.

On the other hand, Online Labs (Olabs) for school lab experiments provides students with the ease and convenience of conducting experiments over the Internet. It has been developed to supplement the traditional physical labs and bridge the constraints of time and geographical distances. This not only reduces the costs incurred for conducting experiments in real time, but also gives a student the flexibility to explore and repeat experiments till they are thorough.

At present, 30 Physics and Chemistry experiments covering topics like Hooke’s Law, Reflection in concave Mirror, Boiling Point of Water, etc are available for online access. Each experiment has sections covering related theory, procedure, animation, simulation, assessment and reference material. It can be accessed at http://www.olabs.co.in.

While, Parikshak, an Online Automated Computer Program Grading & Analysis Tool, aims at improving the quality of computer programmers in India, by exploiting automated systems for programming assessment and teaching. CDAC Mumbai has successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of this tool in its decade old Post Graduate Diploma courses in Software Technology, by providing better computer programmers to the Indian Software Industry.

The tool is now available for use online at www.parikshak.in and has been adopted by distinguished educational and corporate organisations in India.

Sangrah – Knowledge Repository for FOSS in Education from CDAC, Mumbai

CDAC, Mumbai has announced the beta release of portal SangrahKnowledge Repository for FOSS in Education . This portal contains resources about different categories like Learning Management System, Content Management System, etc. It also contains user experiences for these categories, comparative analysis of various tools from these categories, specialised search, and collaboration facility for community supported content updates.

The portal is maintained with least manual intervention as most of the tasks including, resource collection, categorization, user experience identification, comparative analysis, etc are largely automated.

The portal is intended for academic institutions, entrepreneurs, among others to help them to adopt Free and Open Source Softwares (FOSS).

The portal is still evolving, hence feedback about the portal, improvement suggestions can be given through the feedback section on portal.

One year full-time PG-DST course from CDAC

C-DAC Mumbai is offering 1-year full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Software Technology (PG-DST) for the past several years with excellent placement
records. The course provides a systematic blend of theory and hands-on, foundational and advanced concepts, and includes current trends and
technologies.

Admission is now open for the next batch of PG-DST commencing on 27th August 2013, and its admission test (CST) will be held on 14th July 2013.

One-day workshop on Parikshak — an online program grading system organised by CDAC, Mumbai

Computer Programming is an important aspect of any computer-science/information-technology course. This is among the most difficult to teach, since being a good programmer is a skill to be acquired coupled with knowledge of many different aspects such as abstraction, analysis, structured programming, debugging, etc. Usually computer programming is taught through a combination of theory classes on concepts and languages, and lab classes on specific languages. Assignments are given, which are manually graded by the instructor. Manual grading of programs is very tedious and time consuming. While evaluating student assignments the teacher has to act as a compiler/interpreter and inspect each line in program and judge whether the overall program would work correctly. While this grading approach works fine for a small number of simple assignments, it gets unwieldy as the complexity and number of the assignment increases. This, in turn, results in inadequate attention to the practical programming skills of students.

Parikshak is a web based system which offers a solution to this. A tool like Parikshak, which facilitates automated evaluation of software programs can significantly reduce the load of the faculty, give direct feedback to student, thereby leading to efficient handling of programming assignments/exams. Parikshak allows teachers to define programming assignments systematically, allows registered students to attempt solving them online, and automatically assesses the solution. The feedback is available to the students and the faculty, for follow up and record. Using Parikshak to manage your programming component, clearly offers many advantages.

During the workshop, we will demonstrate the system, discussing various ways in which tool can be used in the academic setting, and provide hands-on for faculty. Since we have limited number of seats, we request you to confirm participation from your colleges latest by June 12, 2013, by email or phone call. Teachers from the CS/IT departments are preferred, though others with some programming experience/interest are welcome.

National Workshop on Adaptive Instruction at CDAC, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai during December 15-16, 2011

This workshop will explore the current trends in the field of personalization in the context of e-learning, particularly in instruction delivery. As we all are aware, e-learning has been around for quite a long time now. It is widely accepted by both the industry and the academics as a convenient medium for providing learning environment to the employees/students. E-learning can be made more effective by personalizing the instruction and adapting it to suit the individual learner. The workshop addresses issues and challenges in adaptive instruction and highlights the emerging trends in adaptive instruction. The participants will also get to experience the work of C-DAC Mumbai in creating and using adaptive instruction in education with Anurup . The workshop will also provide an opportunity to interact with participants from different organizations and industry practitioners interested in the emerging area.

National Workshop on FOSS Adoption in Education on August 27, 2011 at CDAC, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai

Many softwares have been developed for adopting technology in education for resource availability, sharing, and access to them even after school/college hours. There have also been developments aimed to ease other educational activities like course enrollment, conduct of examination from setting question papers to correcting answers and displaying results. Such softwares are available in the market in both forms proprietary and open source.

Unlike the proprietary softwares, Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) alternatives are free of cost, source code is available with the software, and the institution has freedom to modify the source code to customize the software as per requirement. For modification and maintenance the institution has full freedom to develop the required skills in-house with the help of faculties and system admin staff or they can choose to hire external help.

However, one of the problems is there are many FOSS tools available and a novice institution/teacher/software development organization has to take lot of efforts to short-list/choose a software for adoption. They will have to spend days looking for different softwares, their reviews, comparisons, etc. If such problems are reduced for the ease of FOSS adoption then the institutions/teachers can reap the above benefits of FOSS much more seamlessly.

The workshop intents to promote technology and FOSS adoption in educational institutions. Various FOSS tools in education will be demonstrated in the workshop. The participants will also get to experience the work of C-DAC Mumbai in promoting technology/FOSS in education. The workshop will provide an opportunity to interact with participants from different organizations and industry practitioners. The workshop will involve keynote and invited lectures by distinguished researchers and/or professionals.
